Spearheading Hand Wash & Menstrual Hygiene Practices in India
heeals.org
–
HEEALS, a non-profit organization has collaborated with various schools to spread awareness about the importance of hand wash and menstrual hygiene among children of variable ages. It's often seen that a simple practice like washing hands is not given enough importance by children as well as adults. But, it is a medically proven fact that proper hand washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick. Similarly, menstrual hygiene is also an ignored practice among adolescent girls because of

Glass Houses… INGOs and Walking the Talk on IATI
lindaraftree.com
–
Over 40 governments, along with UN organizations and the World Bank, have committed to a common standard and time schedule for publishing aid information under the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI). Secretary of State Clinton signed on behalf of the US Government (USG) on November 2011. While US engagement has been very welcomed, US Government performance in terms of actually executing IATI has left much to be desired. But with all the attention focused on how USG is performing,

China's Development Finance to Africa: A Media-Based Approach to Data Collection
cgdev.org
–
China’s presence in Africa is, beyond dispute, large in both trade and what can be called official finance to Africa. But how large, exactly? A new database from the College of William and Mary brings additional resources to help answer the question. AidData's Chinese Official Finance to Africa Dataset, Version 1.0 compiles media reports on 1,673 Chinese-backed projects across 51 African countries from 2000 to 2011 and offers a new tool set for researchers, policymakers, journalists, and civil-

Thematic Evaluation Study on ADB’s Support for Achieving the Millennium Development Goals
adb.org
–
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)—adopted by 189 countries in 2000—when launched were seen as offering the greatest promise for bringing about socioeconomic development and focusing attention on the world’s poor. As 2015’s deadline to achieve the objectives approaches, governments, civil society, and development institutions are already looking back to learn from the MDG experience to inform post-2015 development positions. With this in mind, the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Independent

Types of Foreign Aid
ftp.econ.au.dk
–
Foreign aid is given for many purposes and different intentions, yet most studies treat aid flows as a unitary concept. This paper uses factor analysis to separate aid flows into different types. The main types can be interpreted as aid for economic purposes, social purposes, and reconstruction; a residual category captures remaining purposes. Estimating the growth effects of separable types of aid suggests that most aid has no effects while reconstruction aid has direct positive effects.

Of Donor Coordination, Free-Riding, Darlings, and Orphans: The dependence of bilateral aid on other bilateral giving
www2.vwl.wiso.uni-goettingen.de
–
Using data from 1988 to 2007, we examine to what extent bilateral aid flows of an individual donor to a country depend on aid flows from all other bilateral and multilateral donors to that country. We thereby want to assess to what extent donor coordination, free-riding, selectivity, specialization, and common donor motivations drive bilateral aid allocation as these determinants would point to different dependence structures. Using approaches from spatial econometrics and controlling for

China’s Development Finance to Africa: A Media-Based Approach to Data Collection
developmentgateway.org
–
How big is China’s aid to Africa? Does it complement or undermine the efforts of traditional donors? China releases little information and outside estimates of the size and nature of Chinese aid vary widely. In an effort to overcome this problem, AidData has compiled a database of thousands of media reports on Chinese-backed projects in Africa from 2000-2011. The database includes information on 1,673 projects in 51 African countries, and $75 billion in commitments of official finance. The

The Government of Nepal (GoN) has been operating an Aid Management Platform (AMP) since 2010 with useful results. AMP Nepal currently has information on nearly 700 development projects (both on- and off-budget) representing over $US 6 billion in disbursements, including over $1 billion in fiscal year 2012 alone. In a move intended to further leverage the impact of AMP and geospatial data, GoN will soon make AMP fully public via an online Ministry of Finance portal. The public AMP will allow any
